Obituary

“Boston Peter F. Mugford, long time resident of Hamilton, MA passed away peacefully on March 28, 2024 surrounded by family following a brief illness. Peter was the loving husband of Nancy (McGurty) Mugford with whom he would’ve shared fifty years of marriage this November. He was the proud father of, Peter F. Mugford Jr., and his wife Jade Mugford of Wenham, MA. Peter was the loving grandfather to Peter F. Mugford III (aka Pierce) and Lilia Mae Mugford.

Peter was born in Boston on June 25th,1942 and was the son of William and Dorothy (Butler) Mugford. He was raised in Middleton, MA and graduated from Masconomet Regional High School. Peter graduated from Forsyth Dental and attended Northeastern University. He then went on to become a Boston Police Officer in Mobile Operations Patrol and SWAT team leader. He received several recognitions and awards throughout his career such as the Massachusetts Governor's Medal of Valor Award, one of the highest honors the state bestows on a law enforcement officer.

Following his career as a Boston Police Officer, he worked as the Boston Police Prosecutor in the Boston Municipal Court. After a long, dedicated career Peter retired in 2003 as a Detective. He remained active in the criminal justice field by working as a Homeland Security Consultant. Most recently, after retirement he rejoined working in the Clerk Magistrate's office in the Boston Municipal Court and donated his salary to Cops for Kids Battling Cancer.

Peter held many life long friends. He was someone that many would turn to for help- whether it was big or small. He genuinely enjoyed helping others, doing favors, offering a listening ear, and providing sage advice and guidance. Peter had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed a good natured prank and playful banter which he often referred to as breaking ‘em. He had an uncanny ability to land a punchline that made you want to listen to every story he told.

He was a proud member of the Beacon Society at the Algonquin Club and a Colonel in the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. Peter enjoyed traveling, cars, motorcycles, golfing, model trains, antique cars, boating, fishing, and winter sports. Many of these hobbies he shared with his son and grandchildren.

Above all, Peter enjoyed his roles as husband to Nancy, father to Peter Jr, and grandfather to Pierce and Lilia. He was the type of father and grandfather who rarely missed a game and celebrated wins and losses with ice cream. He was immensely proud of his family in everything they did.

Peter is preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and William Mugford.
