Obituary

CHICOPEE – Salvatore Contabile, 88, of the Sandy Hill section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, March 23, 2024. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Spadola, Vibo Valentia, Calabria, Italy on February 5, 1936, a beloved son of the late Felice and Elisabetta (Pirro) Contabile. He was raised and educated in Italy, moved to New York in 1966, and settled in Chicopee in 1968 where he lived the remainder of his life. He served in the Army in Italy. Salvatore was employed as a meat cutter for over 30 years for Big Y Foods and retired in 1998. He enjoyed gardening, wine making, and was an avid New England sports fan, most especially watching his beloved Boston Red Sox. Salvatore loved the many cats that he had in his life and was an avid fan of the World Cup and Italian Soccer. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Rosa (Pisano) Contabile. They met on February 11, 1966, were engaged on April 11, 1966, were married on September 11, 1966 and were blessed with over 57 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three loving and devoted sons, Giuseppe N. “Joe” Contabile of Chicopee, Antonio C. “Tony” Contabile of West Springfield, and Vittorio S. “Vic” Contabile of Chicopee; his three dear sisters in law, Angelina Manno of Chicopee, Marianna Ciccarelli of New Rochelle, NY, and Maria Caruso of Italy; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three dear brothers, Luigi Contabile and his wife, Teresa, Nicola Contabile and his wife, Concetta, and Giuseppe Contabile and his wife, Stella; his dear sister, Maria Teresa Contabile and her husband, Francesco; and his three dear brothers in law, Umberto Manno, Raffaele Ciccarelli, and Tito Caruso. His Funeral will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 594 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance of the funeral home are located in the rear at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
