Obituary

“BostonRetired Boston Firefighter Leo Martin, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 84 years of age.

Leo was born in Boston on September 9, 1939, a son of the late Ruth and John Murray. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School. Leo enlisted in the United States Army on October 27, 1961 and served his country with pride and honor during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on August 8, 1962 with the rank of Private. Leo worked as a Boston Firefighter for over 20 years, having been stationed in the North End at Engine 8/Ladder 1 and finally retiring at Engine 32 in Charlestown. Leo enjoyed camping at Calef Lake in New Hampshire, a hobby that he maintained for 50 years. He was a craftsman and skilled carver and woodworker, making trinkets that he would give out to those he came across. He was very active in his children's sporting events while they were growing up and playing in college. Leo was a staple at the Grasshopper Cafe, Waverly, Monument Restaurant, and around St. Martin Street where he enjoyed chatting with people. He was a charter member of the Halligan Club, and was also a member of the Bunker Hill Council #62 Knights of Columbus.

Leo is the beloved husband of the late Ann Marie (Crilley) Martin. He is the loving father of Jack Martin and his wife Anne, Tom Martin and his wife Una, Annmarie D'Angelo and her husband Jon, and the late Danny Martin. He is the loving Grampa of Haley, Joseph, Hannah, and Matthew. He is the dear brother of the late William Martin, Robert Martin, and Maryann Newbanks.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Leo's Funeral on Thursday Morning, March 21, 2024 at 9 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. His burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. His visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
