Roy A. Sergi, 72, of New Bedford, formerly of Belmont, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 6, 2024 after a courageous battle with complications from pulmonary fibrosis.
Roy was the beloved husband of Catherine J. Sergi and the son of the late Angelo and Josephine (Guinta) Sergi of Belmont. He was predeceased in death by his sister, Antoinette Bucciero.
You couldn’t find a more devoted husband, father and papa. Roy was a very talented and skilled man who could build, repair and fix anything. His cooking skills were deserving of a Michelin star and you could always find him working out in his garden. He would always offer to help family, neighbors and friends with anything they needed done. He especially loved tinkering on projects at the homes of his daughters and their husbands. He would say “Why pay someone to do that when I can do it for you.”
Roy’s greatest joy in life was his family. His love for his wife was endless, his pride and joy were his daughters, and his grandchildren meant the world to him and filled his heart with happiness and laughter.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Graca Sergi, his two daughters, Jennifer Cosentino (Craig) of New Bedford and Jessica Chiotellis (Peter) of Barnstable, and his three grandchildren, Jack Chiotellis, Ethan Cosentino and Elise Chiotellis. He also leaves behind his sister, Angela Herendeen (John) of Tewksbury, his aunt, Grace Romano of South Carolina, who was like a second mother to him, and his devoted cousin, Joanne Bowes of Lakeville, as well as his brother-in-law, John Graca (Eugenia) of Fairhaven, his sister-in-law, Mariana Gomes of New Bedford, and his brother-in-law, Joseph daGraca (Joanne) of Dartmouth. Roy is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly and he in turn loved them dearly, and many, many dear friends.
Roy was employed for 34 years as a Material Tech IV at Polaroid Corporation in New Bedford. When Polaroid closed, he worked for the City of New Bedford in different positions, retiring as the Storekeeper with the Department of Facilities and Fleet Management.
We know “Papa” will be watching Jack’s soccer games, Ethan’s choir concerts and Elise’s dance recitals and cheering them on from Heaven.
His Farewell Gathering will be held on Monday, March 18th from 4-6 PM at Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford, with a prayer service and remembrances beginning at 5:30 PM. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
