Demitrios C. “James” Economou, 82, of Worcester died Tuesday, March 5th in UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his loving wife and best friend of 61 years, Alexandra T. (Gatos) Economou; two sons, Tony and Mark Economou both of Worcester; a daughter, Lainie Petrou and her husband, Joseph of Shrewsbury; two sisters, Florence Barris and Goldie Goros and her husband, George all of Worcester; four grandchildren, Drew, Kyle, Alexa, and Logan; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, George and Elpida Economou; and brother-in-law, Emmanuel Barris.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Charles and Helen (Kentros) Economou. He was a longtime restaurateur, and had owned and operated Summit Pizza and later the Atrium Food and Spirits both in Worcester for many years. James was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, The Order of AHEPA, and past president of the parish council. Spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, was a special and rewarding experience. It was a great way to create lasting memories and strengthen family bonds. He was a selfless man who always put others before himself. His love for his family was unsurpassed. His laughter was contagious and would put a smile on anyone’s face.
Calling hours are Monday, March 11th from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street followed by his funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
