Pedro Varela, 97, of New Bedford passed away Friday March 1, 2024 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Joana (Fonseca) Varela.
Born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Manuel and Francisca (Gomes) Varela, he resided in New Bedford for the past 29 years.
Pedro was formerly employed as a master builder and construction supervisor in Cape Verde until his retirement.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and taking long walks to Clarks Cove to feed the birds.
He is survived by eight children, Jose Varela, Paula Varela, Lourenca Varela, Daniel Varela, Gabriel Varela, Alcinda Varela, Helena Varela, and Eurico Varela; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday March 9th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
