John Benton McGowan, Sr., 74, of Cedartown passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2004. A memorial service was held for Mr. McGowan on Friday, July 9, 2004, in the Chapel of Gammage Funeral Home in Cedartown. A graveside service was held for Mr. McGowan at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Oak Ridge Cemetery, where he was laid to rest.
Born May 17, 1930, in Fitzgerald, Mr. McGowan was the son of the late Jesse Ludenbarr McGowan and grace Benton McGowan. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joan McCrea McGowan Wilson. He was a graduate of Culver Military Institute in Culver, Indiana and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He was a textile engineer until he retired in 1997.
Mr. McGowan is survived by his wife, Dorothy Zuker McGowan of Cedartown; his children and their spouses, Joan McCrea McGowan and John LaGrasse of Nashville and Brentwood, Tennessee, Diana Ossian McGowan and Earl Morehead of Whitesburg, John Benton McGowan, Jr. of Carrollton, Pauline "Polly" Dinsmore McGowan and Hal Stadnik of Albany and Arthur Banks McGowan of Rome; his stepsons and their spouses, Mark and Rita McGowan of Cedartown and Billy and Cristy McGowan of Marietta; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
