Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Mary J. (Kavanagh) Doyle, 93, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Monday, February 26, 2024. She passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Dublin, Ireland on May 9, 1930, a beloved daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Hayes) Kavanagh. She and her husband emigrated to the United States in 1957 with their five children and settled in Springfield adding three additional children to their family. A devoted wife and mother, Mary worked tirelessly to build a new life for her and her family in an unfamiliar country. She was employed for many years at Easco Hand Tools in Springfield and retired in 1992. She was a member of the Hobby Club and the Brightwood Golden Age Club, both in Springfield. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield for over 50 years. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many dear friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Stephen N. Doyle who was Called Home on December 26, 1995. She leaves her six loving children, Marian E. Cocchi of Dover, Christopher P. Doyle and his wife, Doreen, of East Longmeadow, Joan E. Phelan and Deirdre F. Doyle, both of Springfield, Margaret M. Rush and her husband, William, of Windsor, CT, and Noreen M. Chicoine, of Springfield. Mary was the loving “Nana” to her eight grandchildren, Dr. Michael Cocchi and his wife, Katie, Jill Tredo and her husband, Bryan, Ryan Doyle and his wife, Marsha, Kerry Buckley and her husband, Peter, Mark Phelan, Christine Phelan, Stephen Chicoine, and Amy Chicoine. Mary also had the joy of being “Great Nana Mary” to her nine cherished great grandchildren, Ella and Lulu Cocchi, Sawyer and Tobin Tredo, Andrew, Jacob and Riley Doyle, and Brooke and Henry Buckley. In addition to her immediate family, Mary leaves behind many treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ireland. She will always be remembered for her kind and loving spirit, her generosity, her beautiful Irish brogue, and her wonderful sense of humor. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her loving son, Noel A. Doyle who was Called Home on October 23, 1975; her loving daughter, Anne P. Hartley who was Called Home on September 10, 2018; her three dear sons in law, Mark E. Cocchi, James Phelan, and Rejean “Rocky” Chicoine; her three dear brothers, Richard, Albert, and William; and her dear sister, Eileen. Her family would like to acknowledge and thank Sarah Santaniello for providing compassionate care and assistance to Mary over the last several years. Her Funeral will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. prior to her Mass.
