Obituary

PORTER - Eugene W. Pierce, age 91, of Porterfield passed away on Feb 25, 2024, with his loving family members by his side. He was born in Buxton on Sept 28, 1932, a son of Frank & Julia Pierce. He attended Buxton schools and was a graduate of Samuel D. Hanson High School. He married Mazie Grace Metcalf on November 14, 1953. They were blessed with 4 children over the years.

After a stint in the Army, Gene worked many years for the Maine Department of Corrections (now the Maine Correctional Center) in S. Windham, Me. He pioneered a gardening program for the inmates that proved to be very successful. After retiring from there in the mid 80s, he worked part-time for Walkers Chevrolet, Kezar Falls, ME.

Gene was kept busy with work, with 4 children, and with running the farm. Over the years he tended to numerous farm animals and was successful with his gardens for producing fruits & vegetables for the family.

Gene was always there and willing to help the family in any way he could. For several years, through the summer months, he could be found doing “anything & everything” needed to help his son out at Kezar Lake Camping Area. His children & grandchildren always knew they could count on him as their “first call” when needed for a last-minute ride or pick-up, car problems, etc.

Later in life as he retired and grandchildren came around, he enjoyed every minute with them. You could often find him in his shop making tables, benches & stools customized for the grands. He took pride in his vegetable gardens, passing his skills on to the next generation.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Mazie; his son James; and 2 brothers, Wayne & Keith. Surviving are his 2 sons: Thomas Pierce and wife Deborah of Porter, and Daniel Pierce of Porter. A daughter, Kathleen Vitale and husband Michael of Gloucester, MA. A sister, Ann Purvis of Dade City, FL. Also 8 grandchildren: Matthew, Suzanne, Elizabeth, Anna, Mazie, Sara, Danielle, Ethan, and 11 great grandchildren: Chevy, Camden, Bradey, Kate, Lawrence, Levi, Silas, Aiden, Nolan, Mazie, Elias and several nieces and nephews.

Gene lived a full life and was loved and will be missed by all that knew him. Per his wishes, there will be no services. At a later date, a private graveside service will be scheduled at the Porterfield Cemetery, Porterfield Road, Porter.
