Joanne H. (Neviera) Shalna, age 86, of South Weymouth, passed away on Monday, February 19 after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Anthony “Tony” J. Shalna, mother of the late Christopher J. Shalna, and sister of the late Albina Alekna and Paul Neviera. Joanne is survived by her loving son Gregory M. Shalna and his wife Leah of Florida; grandchildren Andrew (Brittany), Amanda (Dan), Nicholas (Katie), Ashley, and Matthew; great-grandchildren Christopher, Victoria, Noah, Micah, Ezekiel, and Jane; sister Ruth Nauyokas; and several nieces and nephews. Having grown up in South Boston, Joanne lived for many years in Braintree, before moving to the Villages at Weathervane in South Weymouth in 2009. She was a graduate of Boston College, and a retired teacher of the Boston Public Schools. Proud of their Lithuanian heritage, Joanne and Tony were members of the Knights of Lithuania and served on the St. Peter Lithuanian Parish Council. Joanne loved to cook and entertain, and was the glue that held together her family and very large circle of friends, many of whom she knew since childhood. She will be remembered for her faith, kindness, and love.
Visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20 at St. Peter Lithuanian Parish, 75 Flaherty Way, South Boston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Donations in Joanne’s memory may be made to:
