SMsgt. Alonzo F. Thurber III, a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, passed away on February 8,2024.
The son of Alonzo and Dorthy Thurber II, Lonnie grew up in Smithfield, R.I. He was born October 24,1938 and attended Smithfield H.S.
At the age of 18, Lonnie enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of SMsgt. As part of this service, he served in Greece, Germany, Turkey, TX, CA, MA, AK, NE, and several remote tours to Japan, Korea, and Australia.
Lonnie is survived by Donna Tafat, his daughter, Heather and Nicholas Vlachos, his grandchildren. His loved ones with remember his endless dedication to his community and country. Upon retiring in 1983 in Smithfield with his loving wife, Carol. He became an active volunteer member of the Smithfield Senior Center (Meals on Wheels), Friends of Smithfield Cemetary Society, and Historical Society of Smithfield ( Smith Appleby Home) to name a few.
A service honoring the life of Lonnie will be held on Saturday, February 24,2024 at 9:00am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1 Smith Ave, Smithfield, RI.
