Obituary

Cheryl A. (DeMoranville) Melancon, 74, of New Bedford peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, January 28, 2024 with her family by her side. She was the wife of Raymond J. Melancon, Sr. They were happily married for 49 years.

Cheryl was born in Acushnet, daughter of the late Lester L. and Shirley G. (Spooner) DeMoranville and had been a lifelong resident of New Bedford. She attended New Bedford Vocational High School and graduated from the Household Arts Department in 1968. After graduation she went to work at Cameo Curtains in New Bedford as a stitcher for several years. She then went on to work as a machine operator at Titleist in New Bedford for 40 years until her retirement. She enjoyed swimming in the pool and playing cards with her grandchildren. She also loved cooking and baking for her family and caring for her 2 (late) Pomeranians.

Cheryl loved making other people smile and lit up every room she entered. She had an amazing sense of humor and razor-sharp wit. She often made people laugh with her exaggerated facial expressions and silly sayings. Her warm personality made everyone feel welcome and had an impact on the lives of those around her. She was funny, generous, kind and compassionate throughout her life and was undoubtedly one of a kind! To be loved by her was to be truly blessed.

Survivors along with her husband include her 2 daughters: Rebecca A. Melancon and her longtime partner David Hurd of Halifax, MA and Lynne M. Adams and her husband Nicholas of Lisbon, CT; her son: Raymond J. Melancon, Jr. of CO; siblings: Charlotte Cooper of AL, Daniel DeMoranville and his wife Maria of Buzzards Bay, Linda Medeiros and her husband Walter of Dartmouth and Brian "Scott" DeMoranville and his wife Anne of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren: Alexandrea Castino, Kevin Castino, Jr., Joshua Castino, Marcus Hunt, Chelsea Cook, Aiyanna Williams and Trent Adams; 7 great grandchildren: Essence, Frances, Remy, Kaiden, Vienna, Parker and Everly; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was the grandmother of the late Amelia Melancon and sister of the late Mark DeMoranville.

The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to Christina Gardner, Caregiver and Southcoast Hospice VNA for the compassionate care of Cheryl.

A celebration of life will be held for family and close friends at a later date.
