BUXTON- Barbara Ann (Stokes) McLeese, age 92, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home surrounded by her loving family on January 30th 2024.
Born in Freedom N.H., Barbara was the eldest of three daughters born to Edward and Inez (Taylor) Stokes on July 18th 1931.
She would often tell stories of her happy childhood. Where she developed her love for music, taking piano lessons, playing at home for her parents and grandparents and at school events. She also discovered her lifelong love of horseback riding.
Barbara attended high school in N.H. and went on to receive an associate degree from McIntosh business college. She started her working years at Hood Ice Cream followed by a short stint with the IRS and then settling into a 30-year career at York Mutual Insurance company of Buxton and Westbrook ME.
After graduating college and living independently in York ME, Barbara met her husband of 38 years, Fredrick Alton McLeese, a World War II veteran. Shortly after marrying on July 4th, 1951, they moved to Fred’s family home in Buxton where she remained for the rest of her years. They enjoyed spending time on the farm, camping and attending the Fryeburg Fair every year. Barbara spent her days working, raising her two children Edward and Beverly, riding horses, hunting and enjoying her grandchildren.
After her husband's passing and in her retirement years Barbara reconnected with a longtime family friend Alfred Short also a World War II veteran. They spend the next 15 years snowbirding back and forth to Florida and sharing their love of horses. She enjoyed spending her time reading, embroidering, knitting, researching genealogy and playing her organ.
Barbara was an integral part of her daughters and granddaughters lives. Leaving us with cherished memories of family vacations, holidays and the joy of her everyday presence. She passed down her love of family and life. Leaving us with many traditions that will be carried on from generation to generation.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents Edward and Inez Stokes, Her sister Sylvia Stokes, Husband Fredrick Alton McLeese, and longtime companion Alfred Short
She is survived by her son Edward McLeese of Limington, Daughter Beverly Young and husband Kevin of Buxton, Sister Ruth Beckwith of Ossipee, NH, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
