Avery “Flay” Carpenter, Jr., 88, of Arden, North Carolina passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at his son’s residence in Tifton, Georgia. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Carpenter at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2024, at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Fletcher, North Carolina.
Born May 30, 1935, in Morganton, North Carolina, Mr. Carpenter was the son of the late Avery Flay Carpenter, Sr. and Evelyn Stowe Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jennie Huskey Carpenter.
He was an active member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Fletcher, North Carolina. He was a Korean War veteran and served in the United States Army with the 508th and the 101st Airborne units. He was a Red Cross blood donor and successfully donated 17.5 gallons. He had a love for gardening and sharing the bounties with his neighbors. He contributed to numerous organizations and charities. He tried his best to be the kind of person his dog, Oscar, thought he was.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by three sons and one daughter-in-law, Steve Carpenter of Mount Crawford, Virginia, Paul Carpenter of Arden, North Carolina and Tim and Tonia Carpenter of Tifton, Georgia; three grandchildren, LeeAnn Martin and her husband, Griffin of Nashville, Georgia, Christine Carpenter of Hendersonville, North Carolina and Thomas Jay Carpenter of Tifton, Georgia; and one great-grandchild, Jennie Claire Martin.
Mr. Carpenter said, “send me no flowers; if you desire, send a donation to your favorite charity or give blood.”
