Obituary

Worcester: Leo J. Mard, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at home on January 29, 2024. He leaves a son Shawn Mard of Whitinsville; 2 daughters- Karen and her husband David Kalinowski of Boylston and Lauren Lavery of Maine; 7 grandchildren- Lillian, Jeffrey, Joseph, Justin, Travis, Tyler, and Kyle; a great granddaughter Nikita; a sister Mary Sullivan; and special friends Susan Mitchell and Brenda and Dennis Johnson.

Leo was born in Worcester, son of the late Mary E. (Herman) Mard and Leo J. Mard, Sr. Not having any living grandfathers, he was thankful for his Uncle Freddie (Fred Hehir) for treating him like a grandson. Leo was able to experience things he would have never seen or done without Uncle Freddie. He also had help from his grandmother Molly and aunts and uncles. He has now joined his predeceased relatives in the afterlife.

Leo graduated in 1963 from North High School and entered the US Army. After serving in the army, Leo worked in private industry and, at age 29, became a police officer for the Town of Shrewsbury and retired from there. Leo was a third generation police officer, proudly following in the footsteps of his grandfather - the first Jewish police officer and Jewish Sgt of the Worcester Police Department. He enjoyed playing basketball, shopping for cars, writing songs, listening to music, and was an avid New England sports fan.
