Judith A. (Kinney) McCarthy, 83, of Worcester died Thursday, January 25th in Beaumont Skilled Nursing Home of Natick surrounded by her loving family. Her husband of 51 years, Cornelius McCarthy, died in 2015. She leaves her two sons, William J. McCarthy and his wife, Debora, Michael J. McCarthy; her daughter, Jennifer A. McCarthy all of Worcester; three grandchildren, William J. McCarthy, II, Lauren S. McCarthy, and James E. McCarthy and his wife, Alexis; her sister, Linda Connell and her daughter, Miranda Rose Connell, both of Port St. Lucie, FL. She also leaves extended family and friends in New Hampshire and Canada.
She was born in Medford, MA, the daughter of James and M. Elizabeth (MacLennan) Kinney, and grew up in Fitchburg before moving to Worcester, the city she deeply loved. Judy graduated from the former High School of Commerce in 1958 and also from Salter Secretarial School.
In addition to being a dedicated wife and mother, Judy held various jobs in her life. She was employed at Marcus’, New England Telephone Company, Subway, Harding Floral Container, Hahnemann Family Health Care, Interstate Claims Service, and The CCS Companies. Judy officially retired in 1999.
Judy loved vacationing at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire with her family each summer. Judy also cherished trips to Newport, New Hampshire, where she enjoyed time near Lake Sunapee. She also enjoyed visiting various provinces in Canada, where her extended family was born and lived. Judy’s favorite saying was “It’s nice to go, but it’s even better to come home.” Her heart belonged to Worcester.
Judy’s support for her children and grandchildren was constant, whether attending a school function or sporting event. She celebrated their achievements wholeheartedly. You could always depend upon her loyalty.
Reading the Worcester Telegram and Gazette and watching the news on television were daily activities for Judy. She loved and respected the United States Postal Service and their workers. She was a long time member of St. Peter’s Church. She was a proud member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Judy was also an active parent at Maranville Little League. She also found much enjoyment volunteering at school bake sales over the years. She participated in her children’s scouting activities. Judy was very kind and compassionate to the many pets that she and her family owned. Judy also enjoyed listening to various types of music and attending concerts.
Judy’s health has been failing for a while. Few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her joy for life and spirit kept her pushing through the pain to the end.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Judy was a guiding light to all who knew her.
