Obituary

Rita (Barboza) Borges DeCastro, 94, passed away January 23, 2024 in the loving care of her family. She was the daughter of the the late Ernestine and Antone Barboza. She was the wife of the late Umberto Borges and the late Winfield DeCastro. She was the mother of Steven Borges and Donna Borges Desroches (Robert) all of Acushnet. She was the mother of the late Judith Borges. She is survived by three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren including Ryan Desroches (Melissa) of Freetown, MA, and their children Charlotte and Emmeline; Daniel Desroches (Sarah) of Fairhaven, MA and their children Aubrey, Norah, and Hudson; and Jessica Desroches of Dartmouth, MA and her children Elliana and Elias. Rita is survived by a sister, Noreen Wordell of Little Compton, RI. She is survived by three step-children Stephen, Richard and Thomas DeCastro and the late Betty Haylett. She is survived by her step grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah, Melanie, Stephen, Kirstin, Jacob, Scott, Amy, Matthew, Gairad, Benjamin, Lisa and Laura. Also her step great-grandchildren Hunter, Madeline, Haley, Parker, Sawyer, Zachary, Emelie, Dean, Grayson, Cali, Caleb, Joshua, Gabby, Amelia, Emma, Olivia and Samantha.

She was a sister to the late Richard Barboza, Delores Carvalho, Antone Barboza, William Barboza, Ernestine “Cookie” Michaels, Emily Perry, and Lorraine Barboza.

Born in Fall River, MA, Rita graduated from business college and was employed by the Dartmouth School System as a cafeteria worker and matron. She resided in both Dartmouth and New Bedford.

Rita’s life centered around her love of family, friends and Jesus. She loved to knit blankets for her family. She treasured her many friends at church and at her living community. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family who adored her. She especially enjoyed swimming in the pool with her great-grandchildren.

Rita, aka “Vovie”/ “WeeWee”, was blessed, and lived long enough to enjoy many years with her grandchildren and all of her great-grandchildren. Rita had a great sense of humor and was a willing participant in many crazy family antics. She will be greatly missed.

There will be a service to celebrate her life at Cornerstone Community Church, 111 Highland Rd, Lakeville MA, Saturday, February 3rd at 10 am.

The family would like to thank the staff at Southcoast Hospice for all the wonderful, loving care they provided. They would also like to thank her long time home health aid, Kim for her loving kindness over the past years.
