Obituary

Norman H “Norm” Johnson, age 85, died peacefully Monday, January 22, 2024 at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor N. ‘El’ (Magnuson) Johnson, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage before she passed away in 2021.

He was born on November 14, 1938 in Burlington, a son of the late Tore H.S. Johnson and Dagny M. (Olafsson) Johnson. He was raised in Burlington and Wakefield, graduating from Wakefield High School.

Norm and El raised their family in Wilmington, and retired to Emerald Court in Tewksbury in 2006. Norm was proud of his three years of U.S. Navy service to his country serving aboard the U.S.S. Redfin SS-272 Submarine for two years of “Sea Duty.”

He worked and retired from AVCO-Textron from 1962 to 2000 as a computer programmer. He was also a Mason as a Thirty-Second Degree member of both the A.F. & A.M. Friendship Lodge in Wilmington, and the Scottish Rite in Lowell. He and his family were lifelong members of the Lutheran Church in Woburn. Norm found joy in playing cribbage, photography, and spending time near the ocean. Above all else, spending time with his family brought him the most happiness.

He leaves two daughters, Lisa A. Johnson and her boyfriend, Jamie Boudreau, of Tewksbury and Lynn K. Cheney and her husband, James of Wilmington; a granddaughter, Sarah Cheney of Wilmington; and his sister, Betty Palmer and her husband, David of Litchfield NH. He is also survived by his brother and sister in law, John and Barbara Magnuson of Westford; his sister in law, Sally Magnuson; his family friends of 60 years, Frank and Lois Jason of Tewksbury; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Mabel Wallace, Robert Johnson, and Dennis Johnson; and his brother in law, Ken Magnuson.

On Saturday, February 3, 2024 all are welcome to attend his calling hour from 11 a.m.-12 noon at Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey Street, Tewksbury 978-851-2061. His funeral service will take place in the funeral home at 12 noon, followed by burial with US Navy Honors at Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn.
