Obituary

CHICOPEE – Robert J. “Bob” Lavoie, 87, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Fall River on September 16, 1936, a beloved son of the late Joseph and Marie-Marthe Lavoie. He was raised in Fall River, graduated from Prevost High School in Fall River and had moved to Fairview in 1971 where he lived the remainder of his life. Bob served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was proud of his 20 years of service, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. From experiences in his many duty stations in Europe, throughout the United States and Vietnam, he loved to share many stories. He was awarded the Bronze Star among several commendations. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he served as the Director of Security at the former Eastfield Mall in Springfield. Bob was a longtime and devoted communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He served his parish for decades in various capacities including usher, greeter, lector and senior altar server. In addition, he was active on the Parish Council including five years as Chairman and was a member and Treasurer of the People Loving Group at the Church. He also enjoyed contributing his time and efforts on the Spiritual Life Commission and Finance Council. Following his wife’s death, Bob continued her commitment to feeding the needy and administered Renate’s Food Pantry at the Church. He also was a member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at the Willimansett Police Substation, both in Chicopee. He was predeceased by his wife and best friend, Renate E. (Hundrieser) Lavoie who was Called Home on December 21, 2012. He leaves his five children, Erik Hundrieser of West Hollywood, CA, Andrea Quinn and her husband, Brian, of Springfield, Robert Lavoie and his wife, Dee, of Seal Harbor, ME, Ronald Lavoie and his husband, Matt, of Chicopee and Renate “Dolly” Riley and her husband, John, of Chesterfield; his four grandchildren, Joseph Lavoie, Brianna Mangano and her husband, Kevin, Larissa Riley and Jack Riley; his four great grandchildren, Eleanor, Asher, Eden and Riley; his sister, Louise Poitras of Unionville, CT; and his nephew, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his grandson, Cory J. Quinn who was Called Home on October 19, 2016; his sister, Lorraine Lavoie; his brother, Wilfred Lavoie; and his two brothers in law, Andre Poitras and Hans Hundrieser. His Funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with United States Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral home parking lot is located in the rear.
