Dr. Antonio F. Carrara, a longtime resident of Medford and beloved husband of Manuela DaCosta, passed away at his home on Friday afternoon, January 19, 2024 with his cherished wife by his side, at the age of 80.
Born in Pettorano, Italy, he was the beloved son of the late Alberto and Maria Fontanarosa Carrara. After graduating from Medford High School, Dr. Carrara went on to Boston College, earning his BA, MA and PHD there as a Triple Eagle. He retired from the University of Massachusetts Boston after 44 years as a professor who also served multiple terms as departmental chair. He cared deeply for many of his students, several of whom kept in touch through the decades to this day. Among his passions were travel and reading. He regularly visited, researched, taught, and even directed a study abroad program in his beloved Italy but also explored other parts of Europe, Canada, and our own cities and national parks: this last reflected his passion for walking and cycling in nature whereas, his library tells the tale of an intellectual who loved the classics, history, political science, and current events. Antonio Carrara will be dearly missed by many.
In addition to his beloved wife Manuela, Dr. Carrara leaves behind his loving son Alexander Carrara of Arlington, stepson Neil, Jr. alongside wife Amy Landry and treasured granddaughters Hailey and Jenna Landry, all of Plymouth.
Visiting hours will be held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 2 to 6 PM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Funeral and interment will be privately held.
