Ronald A. Hallgren, 94

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Ronald A. Hallgren, age 94, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

He was born on April 3, 1929 in Stamford, Connecticut. He was the son of the late Alrik and Martha (Eriksson) of Stamford. He grew up in Stamford, attending and graduating from local schools. He received a BA degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Drafted into the Army, he served during the Korean War from 1952-53 with the 7th Infantry Division and became a Sergeant. He received the Commendation Medal and also a Commendation letter from the Republic of Korea Army.

After his service, he returned to school and earned the Electrical Engineering (EE) degree from the former Bridgeport Engineering Institute. In Connecticut, he worked as an engineer and helped develop many semiconductor products for a number of manufacturing companies. In 1974, he moved with his family to Massachusetts, where he was primarily employed with the Raytheon Company as a semiconductor specialist engineer, retiring in 1994.

Ronald married the late, former Edith Lilly, of Ashfield, Massachusetts in 1956 and lived in Bethel, Connecticut for many years before moving to Mansfield. He and Edith are survived by their four children: Karen Stepka and her husband, Ken, of Annandale, VA, David Hallgren and his wife Donna, of Mansfield, Wayne Hallgren, and his partner Cathy, of Norton, and John Hallgren and his wife Patricia, of Mansfield. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and several of their spouses/fiance's: Rachel, Sarah, and Andrew Stepka; Brett (Disha) Hallgren, Jill (Katie) Hallgren, and Sheila (Cole) Smith; Joseph, Anthony and Jake Hallgren; and Brittany (Brian) and Macy Hallgren. He also leaves two sister-in-laws, Joan Rickard, of Gill, MA, and Margaret Lilly, of Ashfield, MA and brother-in-law David Nims of Colrain, MA. Additionally, he leaves many nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Ron was an active member of Orthodox Congregational Church in Mansfield, serving in many positions including Deacon, Trustee, and as a member of the Choir and Instrumental Group. Interests included singing with the Williams Chorale of Attleboro, and reading, walking, playing golf, traveling, and playing the violin, as well as spending many years attending and cheering on his grandchildren in all of their activities.

His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 1:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield. Burial, along with military honors, will follow at the Spring Brook Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held prior to the services on Saturday, January 27th from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
