Frederick J. Haneck, age 104, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2024. He was born on December 29, 1919 in Easthampton to the late Michael and Sadie (Jackym) Haneck. Frederick attended Easthampton Schools, played sports and graduated in 1939 from Easthampton High School. In 1942 he joined the US Army and faithfully served for four years with Company C 46th Tank Battalion as a fun crewman, a powerhouse engineer, and a medium tank crewman. After his stint in the European Theater of operations, he was honorably discharged and returned home. He then was employed by Gilbert and Barker and was a star baseball player on their Triple A Team. In 1955, he and Jane Durej, the love of his life, exchanged vows. Together they enjoyed dancing to polkas played by local bands, helping friends plant apple trees and pick the new crop, and traveling to many European countries and cities in the United States. When he retired, he had more time to join his buddies on the golf course and his tennis partner on the court. He worked in his vegetable and floral gardens and shared the produce with everyone. In addition, he worked part time at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Fred was predeceased by his beloved wife Jane, his parents, Michael and Sadie, his sister Irene Kanelopoulos, and many family members and friends. He is survived by his nephew and Godson, Bob and Alida Durej, his cousins, Cynthia Field, Alice Neece and Marlene Zagranski, his dear friends John and Kathy Rallis and Annie and Michelle Dobek, and his exceptional caregivers, Alicja and Donna. Funeral services and burial will be Tuesday. If you wish, make a memorial donation to a charity of your choice and spend quality time with relatives and friends, especially those who are compromised.
