Obituary

Margie Greer Brewer, formerly of Fitzgerald, Georgia, passed away peacefully in Atlanta, Georgia on January 13, 2024.

Margie was born on October 15, 1936 in Empire, Georgia and spent most of her childhood in Hawkinsville, Georgia. She graduated from Hawkinsville High School and attended Young Harris College.

A resident of Fitzgerald for over 50 years, Margie was the co-owner (with her husband Lyman) of The Dove’s Nest bookstore and gift shop for 13 years. For Margie and Lyman, The Dove’s Nest was not only a business, it was a way to express their deep Christian faith and to be of service to members of the Fitzgerald community and surrounding areas. Under their ownership, The Dove’s Nest grew to include locations in Fitzgerald and Warm Springs, Georgia. In addition to her work with The Dove’s Nest, Margie was an avid bridge player, member of the Cherokee Garden Club, and active in the congregation of First Presbyterian Church.

Margie was perhaps best known for her gifts as a painter. She painted landscapes, as well as dozens of portraits of friends, family, and many of Fitzgerald’s best-known citizens. She also painted, often with local art students, murals in schools, hospitals and other public buildings across Ben Hill County.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband Lyman Brewer, and is survived by sons Brian Brewer of Atlanta and Brett Brewer (Jan Hornaday) of Zionsville, Indiana; a daughter, Dana Wolfe of Portland, Oregon; and her grandchildren: Amy Viator, William Brewer and Charles Brewer.

Services will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 1PM at The Grove, formally The Fitzgerald First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Steve O'Neal officiating. The interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Anyone who would like to honor Margie’s memory is invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margie’s name to the Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Arts Council (http://www.fitzgeraldbenhillartscouncil.org/get-involved.html) or to the Fitzgerald First Presbyterian Church.
