Obituary

In Loving Memory of Donal Curtin (March 26, 1935 - January 12, 2024)

Donal Curtin, born in 1935 to a family of 11 in Cork City, Ireland, faced the challenges of growing up in a busy house amongst poverty. A spirited troublemaker in his youth, at 18, he chose a different path and enlisted in the US Marines to serve in the Korean War.

Stationed in various parts of the world, Donal eventually found his way to Boston, Massachusetts. There, he discovered not only a job but also the love of his life, Mary Sabedra. Their love story began at 21 and endured for an incredible 67 years. Together, they raised five children: James, Donal Jr., Richard, Barbara, and John.

Donal, a man dedicated to providing for his family, worked three jobs tirelessly. His love expanded to embrace nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom he cherished spending time with. In retirement, he became actively involved in the veteran affairs community, passionately advocating for his fellow veterans.

An explorer of Massachusetts' South Shore, Donal's favorite dining spots were along the waterfront in Plymouth. Known for his hearty appetite, he was always the "old maid" when it came to sharing sweets. Donal would start each meal with coffee, soup and an appetizer, before he made it to an entree, and then dessert—his favorite being apple pie. Talk about a man who could eat! Due to his small stature, his family always joked that he must have had a tapeworm in his stomach who was eating all his food.

Beyond his culinary adventures, Donal's leisure activities included watching old Western films, reading ghost stories, writing letters to family and friends in Ireland, solving puzzles, collecting leprechauns, creating Christmas displays, and composing poetry. Despite his steel-like resilience, he harbored a gentle artistic side, appreciating opera music and literature.

Donal Curtin, a man of strength, resilience, and artistry, leaves a legacy of love for his family and country. His absence will be deeply felt by the many lives he touched, but his spirit will live on in the memories of those who knew and loved him.

All services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations are made to the Disabled American Veterans fund in Donal’s memory.
