Margaret A.. “Peg” Carter
longtime employee at Griffin Greenhouse Supplies

TEWKSBURY: Margaret A. “Peg” (Lewis) Carter, age 80, a longtime resident of Lowell, formerly of Tewksbury, passed away at Lowell General Hospital on Saturday, January 6, 2024, peacefully with her family by her side


She was the beloved wife of Daniel A. Carter Sr., who passed away on December 23, 1990.

Born in Lowell on February 20, 1943, she is the daughter of the late Donald Rhodes Lewis and the late Mary (LaFountaine) Lewis.

Peg was raised in the Pawtucketville section of Lowell, attended the McAvenue grammar school and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Tyngsborough. After high school, she attended the former Lowell Commercial College earning a business degree.

Each job that Peg had she put everything into it from scooping Ice Cream at Fox’s in Dracut, working at Mass Electric, waitressing nights at Ralph’s Colonial while raising her kids during the day. She was employed at Griffin Greenhouse Supplies for 27 years, which became part of her family and enjoyed many company/family trips over the years. She finished her working career at Megatech in Tewksbury and left her mark there.


Peg was an active member of Tewksbury Senior Center. She enjoyed that so much that she also joined the Lowell, Billerica, and Dracut Senior Centers. In addition, she was a former member of the Tewksbury Red Hat Society.

She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and going to the casino, and music. All types of music. Whether playing the piano or organ herself or with family and friends at a gathering. She especially loved going to live music festivals where she met many new friends.

Peg is survived by two children, Daniel A. Carter, Jr. and his wife Christine M. (Vitt), of Tewksbury and Kathleen M. Carter and her life partner, Derek J. Shields, of Lowell: two grandchildren, Daniel L. Carter and Eva M. Carter and her partner, Devin J. Phillion: one great granddaughter, Aleah C. Phillion: her brother-in-law, Charles R. Carter Sr, of Englewood, FL: her sisters-in-law, Pauline Bagby, of Tewksbury and Marcia (Etheridge) Carter, of Kennebunk, ME.
She leaves many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Calling hours are Thursday, January 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, January 19, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury, to be followed by her Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main Street, Route 38, Tewksbury. Services will conclude with interment at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Road, Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made payable to Friends of the Elderly, 175 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876.
