DOHERTY, Rosaria (Rose) Martino passed away on January 4, age 96. Born in Brighton, MA to Phillip and Phyllis Martino, Rose was the second oldest of 5 children in a close-knit Italian family. She had fond memories of flying down hills on her roller skates as a little girl, and of traveling by trolley with her father into the North End for bread and sweets. After graduating from Brighton High, she attended the Modern School of Fashion and Design in Boston, where she discovered a love for costume design, and created sets and sketches for theater and ballet. Rose developed her own patterns to sew suits and dresses for herself and her younger sister Isabel, and often continued that practice later with her children. She married Jerome Doherty in 1949. The young couple spent their early years together in Boston, where Rose was a buyer for the department store R.H. White. They later moved to Needham to raise their growing family. A faithful parishioner of St Joseph church in Needham, she headed their annual Christmas bazaar for many years. Rose was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, presiding over many a holiday table and Sunday family dinner. We will miss her always.
She leaves her children Victor and his wife Jane of Wellesley, Anne of Needham, and Paul of Stoughton, her grandchildren Patrick, Nicholas, Danielle, Stephanie, Christine, Andrea, and Victoria, and 5 great-grandchildren, as well as her beloved sister Isabel Martino, her brother Paul Martino and his wife Roberta, her sister-in-law Ruth Martino, and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) Wellesley on Monday, Jan. 8 from 4-7pm. Her funeral will be held from the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 10am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Wellesley at 11am. Relatives and friends kindly invited.
