James J. “Jack” McDevitt passed away Wednesday, January 3rd at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 87. A lifelong Medford resident, he was a retired teacher at Medford High School.
Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a graduate of St. Clement High School and was a very proud alumnus of Boston College’s class of 1958. He served as class treasurer for many years. Jack taught at Medford High School for 37 years, leading courses in Business Law and Business Math. After he retired, he continued teaching as a volunteer at the Middlesex County House of Correction, where he helped people obtain their GED.
Jack served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was an active member of the American Legion Post of Medford. He played tennis his whole life and took walks daily. People in Jack’s neighborhood knew him by name and enjoyed greeting him as he was out and about. He loved socializing with people and playing cards. Jack took his family on vacation to Cape Cod for three weeks each summer for many years. He especially relished time spent with his grandchildren.
Jack was the cherished son of the late Daniel and Helen McDevitt. He was the beloved husband of the late Jane (Heafey) McDevitt, he was the devoted father of Michael J. McDevitt, Mark McDevitt, and Christopher P. McDevitt and his wife Katherine. Jack was the loving grandfather to Katherine, Matthew, Ryan, and Timothy. He was a dear brother to Maureen McDevitt, Michael McDevitt, Kevin McDevitt and the late Daniel McDevitt and Helen McDevitt.
Jack’s funeral will be held from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, on Wednesday, January 10th at 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High St, Medford at 11:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the funeral home.
