Obituary

Salem
Michael J. Fischer passed away at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington following a long illness. He was the husband of the late Deborah A. Clay-Fischer and his former wife Diane G. (Dickhut) Fischer.
Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Yvonne M. (Gallant) Fischer. Mike was a graduate of Salem High Class of ’62, a Bridgton Academy graduate Class of ‘63 and received his BA degree in physical education from Wichita State University where he lettered in football for four years. He taught physical education and coached football for over 40 years in many MA Schools, including Salem, Ipswich, Lawrence, and Marblehead.
Mike loved teaching and coaching and working with youth, it was one of his greatest passions. Mike was goofy and the king of dad jokes. Mike had a wonderful community of friends and neighbors including on the Willows in Salem, Parker Lakes Association at his home in Florida as well as many friends from MA that retired to Florida, and Tuesday night dinners with dear childhood friends. Mike loved the outdoors. He loved to ski, jog, sail, garden and bicycle. For many summers Mike co-lead bicycle and camping trips to Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Mike is survived by his son, Mark D. Fischer and wife Sally of Highlands Ranch, CO,
Daughters, Rachel M. Kropewnicki and husband John of Melrose, Sarah E. Jones and husband Christopher of Braintree and his three grandchildren, Nicole Fischer of North Andover, Anya Kropewnicki of Melrose and Christopher Jones of Braintree, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visiting hours at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St., Salem [Route 114 / 1A] on Sunday, January 7, 2024 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. His Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, January 8th at Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem at 11:00 AM to be followed by his committal service in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers kindly consider a contribution in his memory to The Giving Tree Award, which recognizes a student in Salem, MA that have given of themselves at school and in the Community without looking for recognition.
