MEYER III, Carl A. Of Dedham, January 1, 2024. Beloved husband of Elaine (Palmeira) Meyer. Devoted father of Valerie Meyer of Dedham, Carl Eric Meyer and his wife Shanna of Newbury, VT, and Carolyn Meyer and her husband Paul Carp of Waynesboro, VA. Brother of Robert Meyer and his wife Karen of Falmouth, Cheryl Egan and her husband Tom of Saugus, Lisa Salvas and her husband Ray of Jefferson, and Lori Gaudreau and her husband Michael of Wilmington.
Born in South Boston, Carl attended Sacred Heart School, Roslindale, continued his education at Xaverian Missionary Fathers in Holliston and graduated from B.C. with a degree in Psychology.
Self taught on the 5 string banjo, Carl played in the Saint Theresa's Church Folk Group in the early 1970's. He would meet and marry his wife, Elaine, when they were members of the Saint Theresa Theatrical Guild.
Soon after, Carl would begin an uplifting fifty year association with the Music Ministry of Saint Susanna in Dedham. Standing on the altar and joyfully singing and playing for Mass was deeply spiritual to him.
He was also a dedicated letter carrier in Needham for thirty years and was proud to say that he never cut across peoples' lawns to deliver the mail. Carl was an avid sports fan. He was a faithful member of the Golden Sneakers group of The Dedham Health and Athletic Complex.
He raised tropical fish and vegetable gardens. Carl enjoyed many vacations with his wife, Elaine, and their three children. He was an extremely patient horse dad, cat dad and dog dad and will be missed by his canine buddy, Howie.
We will always remember his playful admonition "Never underestimate an old man with a banjo." Well played, Banjo Man.
Visiting hours will be held in St. Susanna’s Church, 262 Needham St., Dedham on Thursday, Jan. 4 from 5-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held in the church on Friday, Jan. 5 at 9am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in The Gardens Cemetery, West Roxbury.
