Obituary

Malcolm E. Gurney Sr., loving and devoted husband and father, 88, of Weymouth passed away peacefully on Saturday December 30th.

Born in Somerville Massachusetts in 1935 to the late Merlin and Ethel (Munro) Gurney, he was the brother to predeceased Alan Gurney of Newbury, Vermont.

Malcolm is survived by his wife of 67 years, Regina (Dolliver) Gurney of Weymouth and their five children, Roger and his wife MaryJane (Cote) of Kingston, Nancy and her husband John Parnagian of Walpole, Malcolm Jr. and his wife Maryann (McGlynn) of Weymouth, Donna and her husband Chuck Tolley of Lakeville and Regina (Rozzi) Gurney of Weymouth, as well as their ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Graduating from Quincy High School Automotive in 1953 he joined the U.S. Marine reserve and started a family until eventually becoming a teacher and head of the automotive department of Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School where he also coached the baseball team.

Malcolm loved cars, baseball, and children. He enjoyed maintaining his extensive collection of scale model automobiles throughout his years. He was a season ticket holder of the Red Sox for 30 years.

He spent many years as a baseball coach both at his school and with the South Weymouth Little League also including time as the League President. He umpired many levels of baseball throughout his life and also served as President of the South Shore Umpires Association. He was a Cub Scout leader with Weymouth Pack 87 and Boy Scout Leader with Weymouth Troop 92. He served his community in Weymouth including helping to run the food stand at Legion field for the 4th of July celebrations, being a Town Meeting Member and serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals as well as being a polling station worker for Precinct 10 in his later years.

Malcolm was a religious man, growing up at the All Saints Church in Ashmont where he met his wife. He continued with church his whole life with many years at the Church of The Holy Nativity in Weymouth, where he served many rolls including the Church Sexton and Vestry Member. He later moved on to All Saints Parish in Whitman where he remained in service with the Stewardship Committee and helping with the church fair as well as other duties. He loved working with the church and remained involved in Faith Alive and Cursillo.

Family and friends are invited to attend Malcolm’s visiting hours Friday January 5th, from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A funeral service will be held Saturday January 6th at 11:00 in the All Saints Parish, 44 Park Avenue, Whitman. Burial will be private.
