Obituary

WORCESTER___Edward J. Ahern, 89, of Worcester died Saturday July 1 in Radius Healthcare Center 119 Providence St.

He leaves his wife of 65 years, Adele R. (Puris) Ahern, a daughter, Adele R. Paradis and her husband, Richard H. of Holyoke; grandchildren including, Elizabeth Buffone and her husband, Christopher and David Paradis and his wife Nina, great-grandchildren including Sophia, Samantha, Jacob and Bethany, a sister, Alice Ahern of Holden and many nephews and nieces. A son, Edward J. Ahern, Jr, died in 1996. He was also predeceased by six brothers and three sisters, Cornelius, Patrick, John, James, Thomas, Maurice, Mary Boyda, Ann Roy and Margaret Ahern. He was born in Worcester, a son of Cornelius and Mary (Fennessey) Ahern and has lived here all his life.

Mr. Ahern worked 36 years for Johnson Steel & Wire Co., he started there as a coal tender and worked his way to foreman and then plant superintendent before retiring in 1981. He was a graduate of St. John’s High School. He was a longtime member of Ascension Church and worked to raise funds for the parish hall construction. He was also a lifetime member of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club and was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Ahern was a member and past president of Fair Share.

The funeral will be held on Thursday July 6 from HENRY – DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Ascension Church, 40 Vernon St. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are Wednesday July 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
