Obituary

Arthur B. “Bert” Mayer, 96, of Woonsocket died Friday December 22, 2023 at Trinity Health and Rehab Center. He was the loving husband of Irene J. (Platiau) Mayer.
Born on May 11, 1927, he was a son of the late Arthur and Beatrice (St. Amant) Mayer. He was a resident of Woonsocket for most of his life having also lived briefly in both Manville and Cumberland.
In addition to his wife Irene of nearly 75 years, Bert is survived by his children including his son Rene Mayer and his wife Donna of South Carolina, and three daughters: Elizabeth Pisello and her husband Michael of Medway, MA, Janet Galipeau and her husband Denis of Woonsocket and Linda Ethier and her husband Stephen of Harmony. He was the brother of Dolores Maher of Connecticut and the late Donald and Roland Mayer. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Mr. Mayer served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. Bert was a proud member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11519.
In his earlier years, Bert worked for his grandfather at Louis B. Mayer and Sons, Masons. He was employed as a machinist at Taft Pierce Manufacturing and finally retired in 1990 from Tupperware Corporation in North Smithfield.
Bert and Irene were enthusiastic members of Dates & Mates square dancing club. Bert and his family spent the beautiful months of summer camping across New England. As his children started their own families, Bert and Irene became members of the Rhody Rovers #84 camping club where they made many new friends. He also enjoyed fishing and working on home projects.
Bert was a longtime communicant of St. Agatha’s Parish.
Bert will be remembered as a devoted husband and father. One of his favorite roles in life was being Grandpa to all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

All are welcome to gather to honor, remember and pray for Bert at his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at St. Agatha's Church at 10:00 am. There will be an opportunity for relatives and friends to pay their respects to the family after the Mass.
Following the Mass, Bert will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Resurrection Cemetery in Cumberland.
