Robert E. Horte, 90, of Whitman, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at the South Shore Hospital on December 19, 2023 after a brief illness. Robert was born on June 4,1933 to Howard and Laverna (Chandler) Horte. Robert was born in the Brockton Hospital and lived his entire life in Whitman.
After graduating high school, Robert earned a degree in horticulture from the University of Massachusetts. He joined the army in 1953 and traveled to Germany and Oklahoma where he met his wife, Patrica and they were married in 1956. He had a long career in the post office where he was a carrier for 30 years and later became a manager. During his career, he obtained 2 awards including one for saving a life and one for outstanding service.
He provided a happy and loving home for his late wife Patrica and their four children Richard, Linda, Ronald, and Paul. Family and faith meant everything to Robert.
He retired at age 55, then traveled extensively and met with his army friends for trips all around the country. He enjoyed hobbies including gardening and Bingo. He also raised beagles for about 35 years and won many ribbons and trophies for field trial competitions. Robert also delivered meal on wheels to shut ins in his retirement.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church for 77 years and read the bible on a daily basis. He and Patricia were always active members of the church.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Horte and Laverna (Chandler) Horte and his devoted wife, Paticia (Corley). He was also predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Hall. He is survived by his sister, Carole Wakeling of Minnesota and four children, Richard of Halifax and his wife Kimberley, Linda Yanuskiewicz (Horte) of Plymouth and her husband, John, Ronald of Florida, and Paul of Rockland. Robert is also survived by grandchildren Michael, Beth, Joseph, Laura, Amanda, Nicholas, Kerri and Paul and several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend Robert’s visiting hours Saturday December 23rd, from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM, with a service at 12:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman.
