Richard J. Staples Sr., 79, of Tewksbury, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2023, at Lowell General Hospital surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was the cherished husband of Maureen A. (Downey) Staples, and their enduring love lasted for over 54 years.
Born on November 20, 1944, in Cambridge, Richard was the son of the late Raymond Staples and the late Mary (Doherty) Staples. His formative years and education were spent in Somerville, where he graduated from Somerville Trade School. Following a stint in Arlington, Richard proudly served in the US Army. Post his military service, he married Maureen and together they moved to Tewksbury, where they happily raised their family and called home for over 45 years.
Richard found joy in simple pleasures, relishing in watching movies and TV, particularly war films. In his later years, he enjoyed reading books about history, travel and especially local history. He enjoyed day trips to Boston and weekend getaways to Maine and New Hampshire with his family. Richard was always willing to help out the neighbors and enjoyed chatting with them as well. He will be fondly remembered by his family for taking on many household projects, although often leaving them unfinished and his “tell everyone I said hello” goodbyes.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Maureen Staples of Tewksbury, and their four children: Kelly and her husband Daniel DiBenedetto Jr. of Chelmsford, Richard Staples Jr. and his girlfriend Danielle of Amherst, NH, James Staples and his wife Jennifer (Anderson) of Dracut, and Brian Staples of Tewksbury.
Richard's legacy extends to his five grandchildren: Erin Grimmo of Billerica, Daniel DiBenedetto III of Chelmsford, and Evan, Cole, and Shea Staples of Dracut. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Staples of Arlington, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Raymond Staples, Joseph Staples, Paul Staples and Margaret Monahan.
In remembrance of Richard's wishes, there will be no funeral services. His spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
