Obituary

David Barnes, 80, of Westport passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Theresa (Rogers) Barnes.

Mr. Barnes was born in Fall River, son of the late Bernard and Margaret (Sheeran) Barnes and had been a longtime resident of Westport.

Survivors include his daughter: Jaime T. Barnes and her significant other Jean St. Pierre of Westport; his 2 sons: David Barnes of Somerset and Arthur F. Carreira, Jr. and his significant other Michelle Mong of Abingdon, MD; 2 grandchildren: Colin Barnes and Retief van Biljon. Mr. Barnes was among the first set of triplets to be born in Fall River and is survived by one of the other of the three, Donald Barnes of Tiverton; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Bernard Barnes, Jr., Margaret Barnes, Edward Barnes and Daniel Barnes.

Affectionately known by his closest friends as the Gray Ghost, David enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Over the years he made some of his closest friends at the Sons of Italy in Fall River, Chicks Cafe in Fall River, Towne Motors in Tiverton, and the Oriental Pearl in Westport. David also had a love of country music, and could often be seen wearing a cowboy hat. In his working years, David got to see much of the country in his career as truck driver for various trucking companies. In his later years his greatest joy was spending time with his grandson, Retief. The two were incredibly close and shared many of the same interests over which they bonded.

Memorial service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the Potter Funeral Home at 6:30 P.M.

Memorial visitation will be from 5-6:30 P.M. prior to the service.

Interment will be private.
