Jillian “Jill” Marie Toomey, lost her decade-long battle with mental health issues on December
12th, 2023 at the age of 21.
A senior in college at University of Massachusetts Lowell majoring in psychology at the time of
her passing, Jill’s dream after graduation was to pursue a career as a therapist, dedicating her
life to helping others. While in school, Jill worked at McLean Hospital where she was able to
pursue her passion for working in the mental health field and helping others who are struggling.
We remember Jill for her kind soul and empathetic nature. She was always a shoulder to cry on for anyone despite her own personal struggles. No matter how difficult life was for her, she was always there to care for her loved ones, acquaintances, and even strangers who were in need. She had a remarkable gift for getting people to open up to her and knew exactly what to say when someone was in need of support and guidance. She was a true light in all of our lives.
Her witty sense of humor will be missed and forever remembered. She always had the perfect
comedic timing with every single one of her jokes and knew exactly how to light up a room with her smile, infectious laugh, and irresistible banter. Even during her final days on this earth, Jill was still sending her loved ones jokes & memes that would guarantee to put a smile on your face.
With a deep passion for philosophy & psychology, Jill was a brilliant woman and was truly gifted, not just when it came to her interpersonal skills. She was constantly reading, learning, and educating herself and had a hunger for knowledge on these topics she cared so deeply about. As a long-time vegetarian and animal lover, Jill lived her life with compassion and love not just to humans, but to animals as well, including her beloved dog Martin & her boyfriend’s cats Dwight and Emmett.
A loving and caring daughter, sister, girlfriend, cousin, and niece, Jill is survived by her parents
Paul Toomey of West Roxbury, MA and Kirsten Toomey of Winthrop, MA, her sister Madison
Toomey of Washington, DC, and her boyfriend Rob Emerson of Lowell, MA, alongside many
friends & extended family members whose lives she truly made a difference in.
Services will be held at First Parish in Brookline on Friday December 22nd at 2 pm. In lieu of
flowers, gifts may be made to Samaritans, an organization that Jill previously spent her free time volunteering for, to support suicide prevention work in Massachusetts. Samaritans, Inc., 41
