Edward “Butch” James Costello III, of Chicopee, MA, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Dec. 13, 2023 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Cecilia “Cissy” (Lonczak) Costello for 57 years. Son of the late Edward Jr and Margaret (Moriarty) Costello. Devoted father of Edward James Costello IV and his wife, Kristine (Tetreault) of Chicopee, Jason Edward Costello and his wife Marisa Joy (Nadeau) of Charlestown, and Nathan Edward Costello and his wife Winifred (Tannetta) of South Hadley. Loving Poppa of Edward James Costello V of Chicopee. Pre-deceased by his beloved sister, Louise Costello and his aunt Margaret Costello. He is also lovingly survived by close family members Joan (Lonczak) Saunders, Sandra (Lonczak) and Lance Walsh, and many nieces and nephews. Graduate of Chicopee High School 1959, he was inducted into the Chicopee Athletic Hall of Fame for football in 2012. He was a life member of Sons of Erin and the Elks 1849 and a member of the Moose 1849, Tigers AC and Knights of Columbus. Very proud of his Irish heritage, he was involved with the Chicopee St Patrick’s Parade Committee for many years for which he received the Woods Award. He served as a Chicopee Alderman. Butch was the owner of EJ’s Lounge, Chicopee, for 28 years. He enjoyed frequent travel with his wife, including Ireland, and spent many years enjoying the Florida sunshine in their “candominium”. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends and community. In lieu of flowers, the donations can be made to the Melha Shriner’s of Springfield, MA. Calling hours will be held on the morning of the funeral, Friday, Dec. 22, 2023 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Chicopee.
