Edelberto DaSilva Horta, 82 of Lowell passed away peacefully after a brief decline in health on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal on May 25, 1941 and was the son of the late Joao Horta DeMelo and Maria Picanso. He was raised in the Azores, and he served in the Portuguese Military in Angola.
Edelberto immigrated to Lowell in the early 1970’s where he built his life on Back Central Street. He enjoyed attending the Portuguese Senior Center at the Blue's Club. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for Pellon for many years before his retirement in 1996 prior to Pellon he worked at Prince Macaroni for a brief period of time.
His passions were tending to his garden, grapevines, and peach trees. He also loved playing his guitar and having his family gather in his backyard singing and listening to the old Portuguese traditional music. He adored returning to his homeland, Graciosa to his beloved Casa da Beira Mar in Vitoria, which he had the pleasure of returning this past summer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Da Fatima Horta, with whom he celebrated their fifty seventh wedding anniversary; his daughters, Helena Espinola and her husband Elpidio, of Tewksbury, and Belina Silva and her husband Saulo of Lowell, the light of his eyes, his grandsons, Michael Espinola and his wife, Tara of Wyndham, NH, Nathan Espinola and his wife Samantha of Pelham, NH Alex Arruda and Corey Arruda of Lowell; and his first great grandson, Luciano Michael Espinola. He is also survived by his sister, Odilia Fernandes and her husband, and many nieces and nephews.

On Saturday, December 16, 2023 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 8 - 10 a.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell 978-458-6816. His funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell. Burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury.
