Stavros Giannakas
Retired local Butcher and Business Owner

WILMINGTON: Stavros “Steve” Giannakas, age 65, a resident of Wilmington for 32 years, passed away at home in the care of his family and hospice on Monday, December 11, 2023, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Vicky (Karapatsas) Giannakas, with whom he celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on (August 23, 2023).

Born in Napi, Lesvos, Greece on April 28, 1958, he was the son of the late Euripidis Giannakas and the late Athanasia (Samaras) Giannakas.

Steve was raised in (Napi, Lesvos Greece), and graduated from Agia Paraskevi and Kalloni schools. Following high school, he attended Mechanical Engineering College of Mytilini where he graduated as a mechanical engineer and served in the Greek Army.

Prior to his retirement, he worked as a local butcher and previously owned and operated Prime Cut Meat Market in Tewksbury and Super Pizza in Haverhill.

In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling to Greece, taking cruises with his wife, taking rides to Foxwoods Casino & Resort, and trips to New York City to visit his grandson.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Athanasia Lafaro and her husband James, of Brooklyn, NY, Efstratia Giannakas and her Fiancé Michael Hurley, of Dracut, and Euripidis Giannakas, of Wilmington, and his girlfriend Leah Ayer of Reading: his grandson, Zakhary James Lafaro, of Brooklyn, NY: one brother, Parasko Giannakas, and his wife Sharon Giannakas, of Lowell, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, December 18, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 71 Chandler Road, Andover, MA, immediately followed by his Funeral service to be held at the church. Interment will be at Wildwood Cemetery, Wildwood Street, in Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stavros’ memory may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168 Boston, MA 02284 or Danafarber.org/gifts, Memo: Stavros Giannakas. Proceeds will go towards small cell lung cancer research.
