Westbrook, Maine - John C. Grant, age 71, passed peacefully on Monday December 11, 2023, at 7:50 A.M. while at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough. John diligently and fiercely walked with Central Nervous System Lymphoma since 2015.
John was born the second child of seven to Ernest Everett and Jeanne Evangeline (Scothorne) Grant of Yarmouth, ME on June 9, 1952.
He graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1970.
He served in The U.S. Army from 1972 until Honorable Discharge in 1975. He received The National Defense Service Medal Expert M16 Good Conduct Medal.
John married Kimberly and welcomed their son John Wesley Grant on April 24, 1982.
John worked for Robert's Office Supplies for many years. He spent 20+ years as a Mail handler for the U.S.P.S Southern Maine Processing and Distribution Center; first on Forest Ave. Portland and then Roukey Way, Scarborough until retiring on April 28, 2017. While in the U.S.P.S. plant John met Jennifer James. Little did they know the profound effect each would have on the other. They married on November 30, 2004, and were rarely apart until John's last breath December 11, 2023.
John's passion for Antiques, buying storage units and being Your Maine Picker brought great enjoyment to John. He had multiple yard sales each year, the likes of which brought the early birds and repeat customers who delighted to see what treasures John had to offer. Throughout John's life you could find him at any number of Antique Auctions, storage auctions and Estate Sales. His last yard sale was in September 2023, and he put the tables in the garage with the expectation of bringing them out the next sunny morning.
After retirement he enjoyed breakfast at River's Edge Deli (Steve's for those regulars), playing cribbage with his friend Al Juniewicz, Jr. until Al's passing this February; cribbage with Carol, listening to Pat, Phyllis, and Debbie. Visiting with Joe up until a year ago. John also enjoyed going to Ocean Gardens or "the club" as he called it, where he visited with the regulars Lisa, Michelle, Tammy, Dwight, Dave and many more. He won the football and car racing pools often much to others and especially Jennifer's surprise! John also enjoyed many family gatherings, spending time together, carrying on traditions and making new memories. John along with all his siblings enjoyed Ernie's catch of the day, lobsters, steamed clams and corn. Never a complaint from Brother John. John also loved sports, especially the Patriots, except this year.
John was a loving Father, Brother and John was THE love of Jennifer's life.
Wes commented during John's treatment with cancer that he was "like a machine" because John was not going to let cancer get him down. John overcame it regardless.
He was predeceased by his Mother, Father and brother Andrew and sister Deborah and brother-in-law Mitch.
He is survived by wife Jennifer, son Wesley, sister Mary (Grant) Mitchell of Cartersville, GA; Peter and wife Becky (Greene)Grant of Florida/Maine; brother Christopher Grant of Bridgton; brother Michael and Nita Grant of Cartersville, GA; and sister Lisa Grant and Martin Cummings of Yarmouth, ME as well as many, many nieces, nephews cousins and in-laws on Jennifer's side of the family.
