Obituary

GILFORD ---- Margaret Susan Gifford, 77, of Sargent Place, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

Margret was born on June 28, 1946, in Concord, NH, the daughter of the late Robert Hammond and Marjorie E. (Grant) Hammond.

She was originally from Bennington, NH where she grew up on a farm with her 2 older sisters. She was always full of life, and everyone she met left with a tremendous impression on them with how thoughtful, funny, and how much she just loved life each and every day. She loved living in New Hampshire and wanted to remain here until the day she died.

She worked 30 years for Community Health and Hospice taking great care of others as a Licensed Nursing Assistant in the Lakes Region ensuring her elderly patients got the best care while still being able to live in their homes. When she retired from working, she wanted to continue that spirit of helping others by volunteering first at the NH Humane Society for many years and lastly at the St. Vincent De Paul Society for 10 years until just recently prior to her death.

Margaret, known to her closest friends and relatives as “Peggy”, will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of being in her company and knowing her. She loved her family, her friends, and her cat that kept her company over the years.

Today we lost a bright star on earth, but heaven gained a beautiful angel.

She is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Margorie Hammond, her first husband Robert J. McAvay, Jr., her second husband Edmund C. Gifford, her son Timothy T. McAvay, and her granddaughter Brittney M. McAvay. She is survived by her sisters Nancy Maillette and her sister Edith (Tom) Tardif; son Robert P. (Margarita) McAvay; grandchildren Robert J. (Stacey) McAvay, Lorenzo Escamilla, Alysia (David) Andrade, Amanda (Andrew) McAvay; great-granddaughter Madelyn Andrade; nephews Tom Tardif Matt (Doreen) Tardiff; and niece Andrea (Jerry) Harper.

There will be no Calling Hours.

For those who wish, the family suggests that donations may be made in Peggy’s memory to the Franklin Animal Shelter, PO Box 265, Franklin, NH 03235.
