In Loving Memory of Elmer 'Al' John Kountze
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Elmer 'Al' John Kountze, aged 85, on December 6, 2023. He departed surrounded by his loving family at the Wingate Residences in Needham, MA.
Born on December 18, 1937, Elmer was a cherished son of the late Elmer and Dorothy (Thomas) Kountze, brother of the late Wallace Kountze, devoted spouse to Shirley (Hilliman) Kountze, loving parent to Michael Kountze and Katherine Kountze, and grandfather to Kiana Kountze-Lee and Jalen Kountze. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, compassion, quick wit, and gentle nature.
Elmer graduated from Medford High School and earned a B.A. degree from Suffolk University and a Master in Education degree from Boston University. He proudly served in the Army National Guard and dedicated thirty years of his professional life as a manager with the New England Telephone Company. Elmer grew up in Medford and raised his family there. When their children left for college, Elmer and Shirley moved to Andover where they lived for 41 years.. In 2022 , because of the need to be closer to their daughter Kathy, the couple moved to Wingate Residences in Needham.
Known for his passion for playing tennis, frequent rides on his bike, a love of jazz music and volunteer work in the community, Elmer's enthusiasm was contagious. He dedicated his personal and professional life to improving the lives of others, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Visitation to celebrate Elmer John Kountze's life will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, MA, from 10 to Noon. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering the wonderful moments shared with him and to offer support to one another during this difficult time.
The Kountze family extends heartfelt thanks to the Wingate Residences staff and residents for the care, comfort, and kindness shown to Elmer and Shirley. Special appreciation goes to Tribute Home Care for their compassionate caregivers. Elmer's Nurse Practitioner, Kim O’Callahan and Good Shepherd Community Hospice Care for keeping Elmer pain-free. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.
