Obituary

Manuel F. Machado, 94, of Lowell, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 3, 2023, with his loving family at his side. He was reunited with his beloved wife in heaven, Maria João (Azevedo) Machado, who passed away in December of 2021.

A son of the late Manuel F. Machado and the late Elvira (Augusta) Machado, he was born on July 11, 1929 in Terceira, Azores, Portugal. He was educated there and married the love of his life, Maria. In Terceira he was a fisherman and also built and repaired boats. Additionally, he worked at the Hospital and was an ambulance driver and also served Portugal in the military for a number of years, working with the highest ranking officers. He came to the United States finally in 1970, settling in Lowell with his wife to raise his family and live the American dream.

Manny worked his entire career in the United States with Prince Macaroni where he worked as a forklift operator for 24 years before his retirement in 1994. He was a longtime Lowell resident and was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. He also spent time at the Portuguese American Center “The Blues Club” playing cards with the other “old timers” and was a member of the Holy Ghost Society. In his free time he loved tending to his grapevine and vegetable garden. He loved fishing, especially off Cape Cod, puzzles and was a lifelong soccer fan and ardent supporter of S.L. Benfica. He also loved helping people.

He is survived by his children, Fernando M. Machado and his wife, Rosemary, of Lowell, Fernanda M. Machado of Lowell, and Rui Machado of Terceira, Azores; his seven grandchildren, Michelle Shay and her husband, Matt, of Dracut, Michael and Jennifer Machado, of Andover, Melissa Correia and husband, Helder Matias of Dracut, Scott Machado and his wife, Kimberly, of Chelmsford, Jason Kosiavelon and his significant other, Mary Cunningham, of Lowell, Christopher Kosiavelon of Provincetown, and Katelyn Kosiavelon and her significant other Michael Arias, of Lowell, his nine great grandchildren, Tristan, Ashton, Mikaela, Dillan, Cameron, Jaxon, Travis, Stephen and Abigail, his sister in law, Celeste Montgomery of Dracut; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Jose Gabriel Machado, and grandfather in law of the late Roy Correia. He was also predeceased by several siblings.

On Sunday, December 10, 2023 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 4 - 6 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell978-458-6816. You are also invited to his funeral mass which will be offered Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell, MA followed by procession to St. Joseph Cemetery in Chelmsford for burial.
