Obituary

Horst W. Plendl
April 26, 1939 - Dec. 2, 2023

STANDISH- Horst and his family arrived in the United States from war-torn Germany when he was nine years old. Horst loved his new country and became a dedicated patriot. He was a man of deep faith who thanked God for his many blessings and for sparing him from some very close calls - like one in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean. Throughout his 35 years as an electrical engineer in the defense industry, he credited God and prayer for his many successes and accomplishments. When the equipment he designed worked the first time, he never sought credit for himself.

As planning and scheduling manager for the Navy Aegis program in Pascagoula, MS he mentored many employees and broke gender barriers in the 1980s.

By enabling and expediting missile systems delivery and testing of dozens of Navy cruisers and destroyers, he saved the federal government millions of dollars.

With quiet determination and exceptional understanding of long-term goals, he produced Naval technical manuals still in use today.
Horst loved life and loved living. He loved figuring things out and he loved working hard.
He was always happiest when he could use his knowledge and expertise to help others, which he did at every opportunity.

In his retirement he built a beautiful home on Sebago Lake in Maine where he and his wife entertained many family members and friends and forged close bonds with friends and neighbors.

Those who went before him were his parents, his brother, Hans, his sister, Sigrid, and his niece, Michaela.

He is survived by five more sisters, a brother, 18 nieces and nephews and their many children. Horst is also survived by Chris, his best friend, life’s companion and loving wife of 56 years who will miss him like crazy.

At his request there will be no services. Donations may be sent to the Windham Food Pantry 8 School Rd Windham, ME 04062 or the charity of your choice.
