Obituary



It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Bernard (Bernie) J. Green 83, after a brief illness. Mr. Green, a life-long resident of Medford, MA, is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret (Peggy) Green, daughter Melissa and her husband Richard Evans of Alexandria, VA, son Bernard (BJ) and his wife Sue of McLean, VA, and daughter Pamela and her husband Charles Lutjen of Holbrook, NY. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Ryan, Shawn, and Liam Green. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard I. and Margaret E. Green, and brother Robert.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Green, a Master Electrician, operated Green Electric, Federal Alarm and Communications, and Electric Technologies for over 50 years in the local business community. He served on the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety Board of Fire Prevention Electrical Sub-Committee in the 1970s. Always concerned with the well-being of others, he was instrumental in revising the Massachusetts Electrical Code to require the use of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets in residential buildings and emergency lights in commercial properties to assist with safe evacuation during emergencies.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Electrical Contractors Association serving as the By-Laws Chairman from 1978-1980 and 2nd Vice President in the early 1980s. Bernie joined the Knights of Columbus in 1958 and was an active member in many leadership roles at the Council and Assembly level, including Faithful Navigator and Comptroller of St. Pius X Assembly #404, Past Grand Knight of Medford Council #141, and member of Arlington Council #109. He was a Sergeant in the 101st Engineering Battalion in the Massachusetts Army National Guard from 1963-1969.

Bernie was a former Arlington Town Meeting member in the early 1980s. He was active in politics, volunteering for countless elections and campaigns on the state and local level. He was a former Republican State Committeeman for the 2nd Middlesex District, a member of the Massachusetts GOP Budget Committee, Chairman of the Medford Republican City Committee, as well as a mentor for the New England Teenage Republicans. Mr. Green was dedicated to a life of service to his family, friends and community and will be deeply missed.

Visiting hours will be held at the Dello Russo Funeral Home 306 Main St. Medford, on Tuesday, December 5th, from 4 to 8PM and again on Wednesday, December 6th, at 9 AM followed by a funeral Mass celebrated at St. Raphael's Church, 512 High St., Medford, at 10 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
