In Loving Memory of Levy James Dill
Levy James Dill, a man deeply rooted in family and community, passed away on November 25th, 2023 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and cherished memories.
Born on March 31, 1956, to James Raymond and Nelda Barfield Dill, Levy's journey was one defined by devotion to his loved ones and his commitment to his hometown of Ocilla, GA.
A graduate of Irwin County High School in 1974, Levy was an active member of the basketball and golf teams, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that would become integral to his life. His passion for the Irwin County Indians was unwavering, a testament to his enduring love for his community.
Following the footsteps of generations before him, Levy continued the family's tradition in the grocery business, a legacy that stretched back to his great-grandparents, S.K. and Allene Dill. The Ocilla Grocery Company, founded in 1919, held a special place in Levy's heart. His journey began at a young age, as he walked the aisles of the company, known as Dill’s Food, with his grandparents, Harris Dill Sr. and his wife, Millie. He later worked alongside his father, Raymond Dill, fostering the business for many years until its sale to J.M. Harvey Co. His dedication, knowledge, and genuine kindness endeared him to customers and colleagues alike, whether during his time at Lowe’s Home Improvement or his return to the family's roots at Dill’s Hardware and Building Supply.
Levy's kind nature and compassionate spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. Levy found solace and tranquility on the family tree farm, a cherished retreat where he found joy in the company of his loyal companion, Bailey, his faithful dog. An avid golfer, Levy found delight in the camaraderie of the Ocilla Country Club, sharing countless rounds with friends and loved ones. His passion for cooking and grilling, especially while watching sports, brought joy to those around him.
While his battle with cancer was arduous, Levy faced it with grace and resilience. He passed away with his sister, Raye, and brother-in-law, Derrell, by his side. Levy leaves behind a legacy of love and memories cherished by his surviving family: sister Raye Dill Young and brother-in-law Derrell Young; and nephews Matt Young, Mark and Lilia Young, Michael, Megan, Tinsley and Dillon Young. He joins in eternal rest his parents, Raymond and Nelda Dill, and his son, Zane Dill, leaving a void in the hearts of many, including his adoring cousins who held a special place for Levy.
Levy James Dill will forever be remembered for his kindness, genuine spirit, and unwavering dedication to family and community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
