WEBSTER – Wanda R. (Fila) Hommé, 97, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023 in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester after a brief illness. Her husband of 49 years, Stefan D. Hommé, died in 1994.
She leaves a son, George Hommé and his wife Sherri of Selbyville, DE; 3 grandchildren, Elizabeth Rawson and her husband Richard of Sutton, Michael Hommé and his wife Lyndsay of Holden, and Shannon Stirling of Firestone, CO; 3 great-grandsons, Marek, Liam and Lucas; a nephew, Jan Kolodziej who had lived with the family and was still very devoted to her; another nephew, Marek Fila in Poland; several nieces and godchildren, especially Erma, Ewa and Krys, who were very special to her. Her brother, Jan Fila, passed away recently.
She was born on September 9, 1926 in Chorzow, Poland, the daughter of Jan and Otylia (Machaczek) Fila and graduated from high school in Katowice, Poland. She fled to Germany in 1945 where she met her husband. They lived there from 1945-1951 when they moved briefly to Worcester, settling in Webster in 1953.
Mrs. Hommé worked as a secretary at Anglo Fabrics and then as a secretary at Deary Brothers in Dudley, retiring in 1988.
She was a communicant of Saint Joseph Basilica and belonged to the former St. Joseph Polish Women’s Club. She was a charter member of the Saint John Paul II Foundation and was named “member of the year” in 2022. She was actively involved in Troop 173 of the Boy Scouts and was a camp inspector and unit commissioner of the Mohegan Council where she was still active.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, November 28, from the Sitkowski, Malboeuf & Hickey Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Saint Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb Street. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Garden of Peace. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 Tuesday morning in the funeral home, prior to the Mass.
