PORTLAND- Katherine Marie Karatsanos, 76, of Portland, ME, passed away on November 14, 2023, resulting from complications due to dementia.
She was born in Portland, ME to Flora and Peter Galonis. She attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School. She worked for her father's diner, "Peter's Lunch" on Forest Avenue in Portland prior to marrying. Later she would work for many years at Barber Foods, up until becoming a full-time caregiver to her mother, who also had lived with dementia.
Katherine was warm to all that met her. She loved animals, enjoyed gardening and loved being at home. She was most proud of her children. In her final years, her son would become her caregiver.
She is survived by her son, Donn Karatsanos of Portland and her daughter, Kristal Karatsanos and her husband, Mike Harriman of Lewiston. Katherine was predeceased by her mother and father, Flora & Peter Galonis; her brother, Arthur Galonis; and her half-sister, Beverly Ricker.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in the late spring of 2024. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at Act.Alz.org.
