Topsham – Paul Viney III, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday November 11 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s.
Paul was born in Brunswick, Maine on August 17, 1944, the son of Paul Viney Jr. and Susan Vojtko Viney. He attended local schools and graduated from Brunswick High School in the class of 1962. Paul graduated with honors from Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston. He continued his education at Auburn School of Commerce where he was elected President of his class. Paul tried out a few different career paths but it was in radio and later in television that he found his happy place. As a Sales and Marketing Account Manager, Paul enjoyed a long and successful career with WMGX and later with WGME. Paul was proud to have served in the Army Reserves.
Paul will be remembered for his outgoing personality, his mischievous smile and his silly jokes. He loved nothing better than to make others laugh. Paul had a big heart. He made friends easily and never held a grudge. He always said that raising his daughter Nikki as a single Dad was the thing he was most proud of. He had many passions and loved to try new things. He loved antique cars and had many, including the Model-A that was in the movie, Bonnie and Clyde. He was a fabulous cook who rarely followed a recipe … tasting was his guide. Paul loved a challenge. He quit smoking in his 40s and started running daily and doing 5Ks. He downhill skied and raced. He played rugby in his 50s and learned how to surf in his 60s, rising early to ride the waves at Higgins Beach. Paul loved the sights, sounds and smell of the sea. Playing in the waves or sitting on the shore gave him great peace. He fulfilled a lifelong dream to live by the sea - building a home steps away from the ocean on the Harraseeket River.
Heartfelt thanks to the skilled and compassionate care team who tended to Paul's daily needs for the last two years. Hero’s all, each of them supported Paul by being fully present at every step along the path of his Alzheimer’s journey until he took his last breath.
Paul is predeceased by his daughter Nikki; his stepson Tristan Friedman; and his sister Paula Barber.
Paul is survived by his wife, Patty Bressette-Long; his stepdaughter Izzy Friedman and her husband Chad Fyfe; his step grandsons; nieces and cousins.
In lieu of a funeral service and in keeping with Paul’s love of the sea, immediate family and close friends will gather in the Spring to celebrate Paul and spread his ashes at Higgins Beach and the Harraseeket River.
