John Thomas McVeigh, 81, peacefully passed away at home Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, surrounded by family and his faithful companion Gus.
John worked 40 years as a steamfitter for local 777. In retirement he worked on the Fishers Island Ferry.
John always loved being on the boat and in the salty air. He was a lifetime angler and spent as much time as possible deep-sea fishing with friends and his son. John was a gifted gardener and had a knack for orchids, irises and stargazer lilies, his favorite. He enjoyed Lady Huskies basketball and was an incredible dog handler. Throughout his life many dogs were blessed to have him as their best friend and master.
John is survived by his son, John McVeigh; daughter-in-law Audrey McVeigh; his grandchildren, Lily and Jackson; and his faithful companion, Gus. John will be deeply missed by so many cherished friends and neighbors. He was a friend to all and loved to help others.
